Current Goal

My name is Atka, and I'm a Arctic Wolf. I'm on a mission to get back to my home in the Arctic, and I'm hoping you can help me. I would also like to visit Greenland at some point along the way. I would love if you could take pictures of me during my journey.

Arctic wolf

Arctic wolves have long, dense guard hairs and a thick, warming undercoat to protect them from the icy cold.
The Arctic wolf lives in the Canadian Arctic islands and northern Greenland regions, where the temperature rarely rises above -30 degrees C (-22 F) and the ground is permanently frozen. Arctic wolves are one of the few species of mammals who can tolerate these harsh conditions. But it's not only the temperatures that are a challenge for the wolf. In search of prey, it has to travel up to 30 km per day. Sometimes it goes for weeks without food, especially during the winter, when it is pitch dark for 4-5 months. But the habitat also provides an advantage: This far north, humans can hardly prey on it. The Arctic wolf is a sub-species of the grey wolf. Arctic wolves are usually smaller than gray wolves, and also have smaller ears, slightly shorter muzzles, and shorter legs to reduce exposure to the frigid air. They live alone or in packs of about 6 wolves and are usually all white with a very thick, insulating coat.

Binomial name: Canis lupus arctos

Diet: The arctic wolf lives mainly on muskox, Arctic hares and caribou.

Conservations status: Data deficient [DD]

Lifespan: 7 years, 20 in captivity

Global Home: North America, North Greenland, Canadian Arctic
