This cache refers to the (state) Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiasma, but being a mystery cache is located somewhere completely different. Which would have been an interesting story in the freezing evening, but what can you do... :)

A quick morning stop here (-19ºC, windchill -27ºC!). This cache reminds of the old Greek restaurant that use to be here from the 1960s. In the 1980s Iso Roobertinkatu became Helsinki's first pedestrian street, and has often been critisised for not working very well – it isn't in the busiest centre, has a lot of truck traffic to the shops on it, and the general appearance is a bit scruffy. However, it is in the heart of the 5th district, Punavuori, a very trendy part of the city and often refered to, even stereotypically, as a hipster centre of the entire country. It does have a working-class history, like Kallio, but gentrification came here earlier and in greater force, probably due to Punavuori's location very close to the centre and in between historically more posh neighbourhoods.

Geognome14 took it to Helsinki Geopoly – Siltasaari

Winter is advancing clearly. After the first credible snowfall this winter in Helsinki the temperature has dropped to -12ºC (windchill -20ºC), and even the next Geopoly cache for me, Siltasaari, is close to the sea. :) This time though more of an inlet.
Even Siltasaari ("bridge island") is not a street, but a cape, former island and part of the 11th district of Kallio. When arriving there by the Pitkäsilta bridge, one crosses over from the city centre to the traditionally very proletarian area and the stronghold of the political left – Siltasaari houses the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party (the most important builder of our welfare state after WWII) and all major labour unions. Though thanks to the seaside location and nice buildings from the early 1900s, especially Siltasaari has become more bourgoise, and gentrification is doing its thing in the whole of Kallio. Nowadays the worst-off areas socio-economically are further out, in the high-rise suburbs built in the 1960s and 1970s. Kallio has varying buildings, somewhat cheaper housing prices, great public transport connections and accessibility, and lies close to the city centre and even more central in the wider urban structure.

Sunday dawned in light snowfall but heavy northerly winds and -8ºC (windchill -14ºC). I headed for my next cache in the Helsinki Geopoly game, Eira. Named after the 6th district (though actually located in the neighbouring 7th, Ullanlinna) it's not a street as most Geopoly/Monopoly places. In the Finnish Monopoly, it's in the second-most expensive group of green streets – having a hotel there is a considerable threat to one's co-players. :)
Also in real life Eira is very expensive, a small district of urban villas with small gardens dating mostly from the 1910s and designed in art nouveau (Jugend) style, characteristic to some central areas of Helsinki – though here in smaller scale. It would be very nice to live here, perhaps even overlooking the sea...

Welcome to Finland, little travel bug, and its capital Helsinki! More specifically the cache Tarja is in the 15th district, Meilahti, in the Vähä-Meilahti ("Lesser Meilahti") park / forest / villa area right next to Mäntyniemi, the Residence of the President of the Republic. In fact, the cache is named after Tarja Halonen, our previous president and first woman to hold the office (1.3.2000–1.3.2012). Tamminiemi, the residence of long-time president Urho Kekkonen and now a museum, is also quite near as is the open-air museum of Seurasaari. Author Maila Talvio lived in one of the villas.
Let's see what adventures we'll have in our wintry city! :)
