~~ Having been born in North Carolina, William S. Lived in eastern Missouri before serving in the Civil War of the United States. His service was in the United States. Briefly he was a prisioner of war, captured by the confederates. After the war he returned to his wife Nancy J. Stephenson. She died about 11 months later, likely dying in childbirth. On March 14, 1869 he married Lillie Wade. On December 13, 1869 she gave birth to his only child, Walter Sherman Mikel. She died two weeks later on Janurary 1, 1870. In 1871 he remarried, this time to Kate Kayes. Although she had 3 children, none of them had children. I am descended from the baby boy who was raised by his grandmother after his mother died. I dedicate this travel bug to his memory.
