Current Goal

Please drop this item in rural OR Premium Member Only caches.  Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event.  Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean and prevents tangling with other items.  Otherwise, take the travel bug anywhere you wish.  No permission is needed to leave the U.S.

Travel bug photos in the logs are appreciated.  I will re-post them here, where they can be seen by other cachers.

About This Item

bluecornflower11b

This travel bug is one of a series of six made to commemorate soldiers who died serving their respective countries.  Although the bugs originated in the United States, they were sent to cachers (Tipsy_1) in Belgium who agreed to start the bugs on their journey in a nation where so many military dead are interred.

The travel bugs are laminated photographs of poppies on one side and blue cornflowers on the other.  In the U.S. and Canada poppies are a symbol of war dead whereas nations in Europe respectively use either poppies or cornflowers for the same purpose.  We hope future cachers will honor a fallen soldier with a visit, be it at a military cemetery in the land where they died, or in their homeland, at a family plot at a church or civil cemetery.  Photos if possible.

This was the first Belgian cache the memorian TB's visited. It's one of our own and we are very proud of it.
My daddy and uncle discovered this spot which is quite unique we feel, hidden in the forests around our village.

At the end of the world war (even after liberation of our region) many V1 and V2 bombs were launched in Germany to hit the Antwerp harbor. Many of them hit other targets in the region alas, causing fear and many deaths. My own village was hit by 18 of these bombs, with also victims.

No traces remain, except the crater of the V2 bomb that fell here on Jan 9 of 1945.
Luckily no deaths, but the quite big crater can still be seen. We have hidden here a cache to bring people to this place and remember the war.

At the moment it's filled with water but that is quite unusual, it's just because we had so much rain this winter

We took the memorian TB's to this little chapel in the fields around the famous trapist brewery of Westmalle, close to our home.

On 25 August 1942 a British lancaster bomb plain crashed here during a mission to Frankfurt, as it was taken down by the Germans. The 7 crew members died at the spot, and were buried there (later the graves were moved to the graveyard at the church of Westmalle where they still rest).
Another plane (a Halifax) crashed on 31 August 1943 very close.

The monks built a chapel close to the place of the crash and in the chapel you can see a memorial plate for the soldiers who died.
