Current Goal

Please drop this item in rural OR Premium Member Only caches.  Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event.  Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean and prevents tangling with other items.  Otherwise, take the travel bug anywhere you wish.  No permission is needed to leave the U.S.

Photos in the travel bug logs are appreciated.  I will be re-post them here, where they can be seen by other cachers.

About This Item

browntanorangestonedonut

This is one of a series of large beads obtained from different places and converted into travel bugs.  They are named for Texas towns with interesting names or histories.

Austonio is in western Houston County.  It was established before 1900 and named Pearville.  In 1930, being unhappy with the name, the community sponsored a contest to choose a new one. The winning entry came from Ruth Tucker, who suggested the name Austonio, a combination of Austin and San Antonio.  The fact that the town is easily 250 miles from either city evidently didn't matter.

A consolidated school serving Austonio, Ash, Mapleton, and Creek opened in 1931, and a post office was established the following year. The community prospered in the years just before World War II, and in 1940 it reached a peak at a population of 150.  After 1945, the town began to decline.  The post office was discontinued in 1971 and the population declined to 37 by 2000.
