Volkerak
For the Delta Works, many studies were carried out in the Waterloopbos in the 1950s and 1960s. This is also the case for the Volkerak.
A dam was placed between the Hollands Diep and the Volkerak, so that the south of Zeeland was protected against high water. Locks were also constructed for busy shipping traffic. The scale model was initially plotted with concrete blocks measuring 40 x 40 x 40 cm. Then it was built more precisely using brick.
In the scale model that was built, they wanted to investigate the length over which the bottom of the lock complex had to be reinforced with stones. The flow of water from the lock created a hole in the sandy bottom. Such an excavation pit close to the lock gates could create a dangerous, unstable situation. By simulating the current, it was possible to determine how heavy the stones should be and where they should be dumped. After the investigation, the bottom of the lock was reinforced with the help of stone pouring and concrete blocks were placed at the end of the stone pour to minimize the washing away of the sand.
