Batty Koda is, obviously, a bat. He was captured by humans, where they put an antenna on his head and experimented on him various times. He then escaped and flew to Ferngully, where he met Crysta and Zak and helped defeat Hexxus. But the most important thing is that he's a bat. (From IMDB)
