…der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg auf 10 Geocoins verteilt – schon mehrfach hätte ich die eine oder andere bekommen können. Nun konnte ich tatsächlich den Komplettsatz erwerben und bin froh, diese Serie meiner Sammlung historischer Themen hinzufügen zu können.

Die Schlacht von Gettysburg fand vom 1. bis zum 3. Juli 1863 bei der Kleinstadt Gettysburg in Pennsylvania wenige Kilometer nördlich der Grenze zu Maryland während des Sezessionskrieges statt. Mit mehr als 43.000 Opfern, davon über 5.700 Gefallenen, war sie eine der blutigsten Schlachten auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent überhaupt und gilt gemeinsam mit Vicksburg und Chattanooga und neben Antietam und Perryville 1862 sowie dem Fall von Atlanta und Philip Sheridans Feldzug im Shenandoahtal 1864 als einer der entscheidenden Wendepunkte des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges. Mit der Niederlage der Nord-Virginia-Armee unter General Robert E. Lee endete die vorletzte Offensive der Konföderation auf dem Territorium der Union. Die Initiative ging danach auch auf dem östlichen Kriegsschauplatz im Wesentlichen auf die Union über. Die dreitägige Schlacht begann am ersten Tag mit einem Begegnungsgefecht, das die Konföderierten für sich entscheiden konnten. Die Nord-Virginia-Armee griff am folgenden Tag die Potomac-Armee auf beiden Flügeln an, konnte die Stellungen der Nordstaatler jedoch nicht durchbrechen, so dass dieser Tag unentschieden endete. General Lee versuchte, am dritten Tag mit einem Angriff auf die Mitte der Potomac-Armee die Entscheidung zu erzwingen, scheiterte jedoch trotz eines vorübergehenden Einbruchs in die Stellungen der Nordstaatler. Die Angriffskraft der Nord-Virginia-Armee war damit erschöpft.

The Battle of Gettysburg took place from July 1 to 3, 1863 near the small town of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania a few miles north of the Maryland border during the War of Civilizations. With more than 43,000 casualties, including over 5,700 dead, it was one of the bloodiest battles on the American continent and is considered one of them together with Vicksburg and Chattanooga and alongside Antietam and Perryville in 1862 and the fall of Atlanta and Philip Sheridan's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 decisive turning points of the American Civil War. With the defeat of the Northern Virginia Army under General Robert E. Lee, the penultimate offensive of the Confederation on Union territory ended. The initiative was then essentially transferred to the Union in the eastern theater of war as well. The three-day battle began on the first day with a face-to-face encounter that the Confederates won. The Northern Virginia Army attacked the Potomac Army on both wings the following day but was unable to break through the Northerners' positions, so that day ended in a draw. General Lee tried to force the decision on the third day by attacking the center of the Potomac Army, but failed despite a temporary break in the positions of the Northerners. The attack power of the Northern Virginia Army was thus exhausted.
