About This Item

We think of witches as evil old ladies; as young children we are taught to fear them. They appear in fairy stories as dangerous and to be avoided, not only in this country but all across Europe.
In reality, witches where the wise women in the community, the mid wife, the nurse and the doctor. They possessed medicinal knowledge of wild herb and plant remedies. Did they cook up spells or did they cook up a blend of ingredients with natural abilities to heal or cure? However, if the patient was too ill to be cured then god help her, she was blamed for cursing them or putting a spell on them and her own life could be in danger when she was only trying to help. Traditionally portrayed with hook noses, this could be explained due to the upper lip drawn in due to lack of teeth, pulling the nose down with it giving a hook-nosed appearance. With no dental care in times gone by, most people would have lost all their teeth by middle age, and seeing as a witch had more chance of living longer than others due to her medicinal knowledge, this hooked nose could have been seen as a characteristic trait of a witch.

Modern fiction is a lot kinder to witches. I like the way Terry Pratchett portrays one of his witches, Granny Weatherwax, with ‘borrowing powers’.  She lays down on her bed and sends her mind into an animal or bird and watches the world through its eyes. This has practical uses such as watching the goings-on in the village, but there is risk in ‘borrowing’. The witch's mind might forget to come back to her body and get stuck in the animal, where someone finding her body may think she is dead and buries her lifeless body. Another risk upon returning to her body she may try and act like the bird or animal for a while. Trying to fly out of an upstairs window is not a good idea! This trackable represents a ‘borrower’, using the finder to show her what they see till they let her rest in the next cache to borrow the next finder till she has seen all the world of geocaching!
