This travel bug wants to travel around to enhance knowledge of hippos. Therefore, it would like to be placed in caches that a hippo would like, such as near open fields, water or a forest. No large urban areas or cities please.
There are only 2 species of hippo left with many extinct species, the common hippo and the Pygmy hippo. Both are species are shown on the key ring attached to the travel bug. The key ring its self comes from one of our favourite zoos, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire, which has a breeding programme of both species.
The common hippo is the largest of the two species, and is found in many African countries. Sadly it has faced severe population declines due to poaching for meat, using teeth as an ivory alternative, and to protect local villages.
The second species of hippo is the smaller Pygmy hippo, found in the forests of Western Africa. The major threat this species faces is habitat loss due to logging, as well as hunting particularly in Liberia.
The aim of this travel bug is to raise awareness of hippo conservation, as they often go under the radar compared to more iconic species.
