Adamastor é um mítico gigante baseado na mitologia grego-romana, referido por Luís de Camões em Os Lusíadas, também referido por Fernando Pessoa no poema O Mostrengo, chamando-lhe Mostrengo. Representa as forças da natureza contra Vasco da Gama sob a forma de uma tempestade, ameaçando a ruína daquele que tentasse dobrar o Cabo da Boa Esperança e penetrasse no Oceano Índico, os alegados domínios de Adamastor.
