March 2015 - Ides of March Sherpa
Shiny Silver & Antique Copper
In Rome, the Ides of March marks the celebration of the New Year and the worship of Anna Perenna, a goddess/wood nymph who represents the circle of the year starting again and for us... the new geocaching season as winter snows disperse and people get back outdoors. It's a celebration of spring growth, love, wine and the new calendar all wrapped up together.
Anna Perenna is a kind of patron saint of the turn of the greek calendar. Their new year celebration is mid march / Ides of March and in legends she was going to be betrayed and made to look a fool so she ran to escape, but fell into a river and drowned. She came back as a benevolent water nymph who blesses the new seasons at the ides for a prosperous new year, easy births, etc., etc. They have a huge wine festival in her honor and it's a big to-do in Europe around the Mediteranean.

๐ FTF ๐ What a gorgeous day! Beautiful weather for a walk... sunny and brisk. When the mountain closed at 2:00, I donned the ski boots for hiking boots and was planning on a little afternoon hike in the Sherwins.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that this cache had been published yesterday I was just down on the Wagon Wheel Trail earlier this morning, hiking to The Skull (GCAQ2B7).
I decided to postpone my Sherwin hike and head down to Swall Meadows instead. I arrived at the trailhead and must exclaim that I have never come across a double-decker container like this before... I like it.

I am surprised at how long this cache has gone without a first to find. I skied until about 1:30 this afternoon and then dropped down for a pleasant Swall Meadows hike and, the... ๐ (FTF) ๐

I did the full wagon wheel run, top to bottom, this afternoon. Gorgeous day!
I wasn't anticipating an FTF when I got to the trailhead... WhooHoo!
The Sherpa danced with FTF joy and in all the excitement, never dropped off a pathtag. ๐ฎ

Very enjoyable setting for some pleasant cache conversation, coffee, and pastry. I had a great time. As the sun grew stronger, we all moved to a shady area and continued on.
Even some curious muggles (future cachers) joined in the fun and conversation.

Once again, an empty log sheet... We were not anticipating that... What a bonus for Rock Star Sarah, who hasn't cached for years. ๐
Gorgeous misty weather today... we hiked up to "the ruins" and back. Besides these first two new caches, I also managed to reconcile three DNFs that I had logged on my last ruins hike.
Nice ambiance at ground zero... After we all signed the log sheet, The Sherpa dropped off a Totem of the Cache pathtag. ๐

I found good parking (a great start already) and set off for the first stop. The air was cool and fair... excellent weather for hiking. I found myself thoroughly enjoying the scenery as I made my way toward ground zero and... Twilight's Exile. ๐
Exiled to a place of beauty and having lain in wait for three days already, I was quite surprised to discover myself the first to find this well stocked cache... I signed my name in the logbook and made a trade. ๐

MamaMia and I walked over from our site in South Camp after breakfast this morning, taking only pictures and leaving no trace, except for our footprints on the trail (LNT). ๐
Inside Big Sur Station, we met Crystal, who handed me the cache, and Tim. They gave us great recommendations on local hikes, the best routes and even, scenic vantage points. ๐
From the station, Sue and I retraced our steps back down the Pine Ridge Trail and headed over to the newly rebuilt and recently opened Pheiffer Falls and Valley View Trailhead; we made a counterclockwise loop of it. The trail work since the fire (including brand new steps, bridges and fencing) is remarkable... ๐
While returning from Valley View, I spotted a buck, which allowed me and a few others to watch it while grazing for a few moments. I often see does and sometimes fawns but rarely bucks... Later, at dusk, I came upon yet another buck over by the old Homestead. ๐
Anyway, before returning the cache to Crystal and Tim, I made sure to sign the logbook and drop a few pathtags. ๐
