The NAVSTAR satellites are the space based components of the Global Positioning
system (GPS). For the system to be fully operational, twenty four satellites
orbit the earth at 10,900 miles in 6 orbital planes [depicted on the coin] with
four satellites in each plane. This geocoin is named after one of those satellites.
The GPS 2R-7 (aka 2001 004A and SVN 54) satellite was built at a cost of $44
million and launched in 2001. It weighs about as much as my car (~2 metric tonnes)
and has a design lifespan of 10 years - though many of the GPS satellites in
orbit are well past their design lifetime. Hopefully this coin will remain in
circulation as long as, or longer than, the GPS 2R-7 satellite.
Please log this geocoin when you find it and don't forget to mark it as dropped
when it goes back into a cache. This geocoin has an extra feature. When you

stats section of your profile.
