Mainz ist die Landeshauptstadt von Rheinland-Pfalz und mit 209.779 Einwohnern zugleich dessen größte Stadt. Mainz liegt gegenüber der Mündung des Mains am Rhein und bildet mit der angrenzenden hessischen Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden ein länderübergreifendes Doppelzentrum mit rund 490.000 Einwohnern. Die Stadt ist Sitz des römisch-katholischen Bistums Mainz sowie mehrerer Fernseh- und Rundfunkanstalten, wie des Südwestrundfunks (SWR) und des Zweiten Deutschen Fernsehens (ZDF). Mainz versteht sich als eine Hochburg der rheinischen Fastnacht.

Mainz gilt als die Heimat des modernen Buchdrucks, da hier von Johannes Gutenberg in den frühen 1450er Jahren die ersten Bücher mit beweglichen Lettern auf einer beweglichen Druckmaschine gedruckt wurden.

Mainz is famous as the home of the invention of the movable-type printing press, as the first books printed using movable type were manufactured here by Johannes Gutenberg in the early 1450s.
