The Klenkes is the sign of the inhabitants of Aachen. It means the spreaded small finger of the right hand. Aachen was well-known for its cloth industry and therefor also for its needle factories. The workers used their right small finger for examining and sorting the needles. By the time the cloth industry lost ever more its prevailing role in the area of Aachen. But the sign of the Klenkes remained. Far from the city the Klenkes greeting is particularly useful: The Aachener makes himself recognizeable to other Aacheners, who are identified for example on the basis of the licenseplate (AC). In this way the Klenkes already helped to spontaneous joy celebrations.
