Goal: Travel from cache to cache in search of BRAAAAINS. Visit Geocaching events. Spread the plague. Please take photos!
Meet Margaux, patient # 268 in our ongoing study of the spread of the zombie plague via geocaching. Margaux was a famous astrologer and psychic who gained fame after she went on a daytime talk show and was able to channel the spirit of a deceased rock star who disclosed to her the location of a secretly recorded album that he never released to the public. After her television appearance she moved to L.A., where she gained many rich and famous clients from all over the world and traveled more often than she was home. She was often recognized when she went out in public. She loved to geocache, but because of her fame she liked to cache in remote areas of the wilderness where she was unlikely to run into people. She also loved to geocache at memorials, monuments, and cemeteries, as the spirits were particularly strong there. When she geocached at these urban locations, she wore a disguise that included a salt-and-pepper short-haired wig, a deerstalker cap, a matching cape, and a pipe. She was aware that she struck an uncanny resemblance to Sherlock Holmes when she wore her geocaching disguise. Documents in her house revealed that she was in the process of creating a geoart trail in the shape of her astrological sign, Aquarius.
Our research has revealed that Margaux contracted the zombie plague from Lena, patient #9 in our zombie study. Margaux travelled to Washington, D.C., to do psychic and astrological readings for the wives of numerous Senators. While she was there, she learned of a nighttime geocaching tour led by a Park Ranger named Christopher, patient # 264. Christopher led many tours of the monuments in Washington, D.C., and he also had an interest in paranormal ghost activity. Christopher’s nighttime geocaching tour went to the many virtual and earthcaches around the National Mall, such as at the WWI Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, the Roosevelt Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. We know from an email to her mom that Margaux donned her disguise and was looking forward to geocaching amongst the monuments and spirits along the National Mall. Pictures attached to the logs for the tour reveal that for the earthcaches, Christopher passed around a magnifying glass so geocachers could get an up close look at the marble of the monuments to identify the type of marble and the impurities that existed within the stone. Lena noted in her logs that while she wasn’t feeling well, she loved getting an up-close look at the marble, and she loved the haunted feeling of the nighttime virtual geocaches. She also noted that when she handed the magnifying glass to another geocacher, she couldn’t help but think the geocacher was the spitting image of Sherlock Holmes. Marguax fell sick within a few days of the geocaching tour, and she soon was chasing blood instead of spirits. More research is needed to determine if she stayed in the DC area before completely succumbing to the plague, or if she traveled elsewhere.
This travel bug is part of a larger study to take a closer look at how the zombie plague might propagate if the primary vector for spreading the disease was geocaching. Please visit the following website for further details, and a visualization of how the disease has propagated thus far based on the movement and discovery of this and other infected Zombie travel bugs:
