Current Goal

This trackable has the goal to circulate more than five years and to be moved by at least 25 cachers. That is a rate of five drops per year for five years, or a drop every 73 days.  As of 7-Sep-20 it had survived for 3.5 years and had been moved by 29 cachers, for an average release every 44 days.

No permission is needed to leave the U.S.  While in the U.S., please drop it in a Premium Member only OR a rural cache near a busy trail or road. Do not place it in an urban cache or abandon it at a caching event where there is no security.  Transport the bug in the original plastic bag for as long as the bag lasts; the bag keeps the trackable clean, protects the number and prevents tangling with other items.  Otherwise, take the trackable anywhere you wish.

Trackable photos are appreciated, but do not show the tracking number. The images will be re-posted here.

About This Item

In the fall of 2015 my wife and I made a trip from Texas up through Wyoming, Montana, Alberta and British Columbia.  I am always on the lookout for something to convert into a travel bug.  This is one such item.

Devils Tower is an igneous intrusion or laccolith.  The oval-shaped mesa around the Tower suggests the old volcano's shape.   The area is part of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming.   It rises dramatically 1,267 feet above the surrounding terrain.  Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt.  In recent years, about 1% of the Monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.

The name Devil's Tower originated in 1875 during an expedition led by Col. Richard Irving Dodge when his interpreter misinterpreted the name to mean Bad God's Tower, which then became Devil's Tower. All information signs in that area use the name "Devils Tower", following a geographic naming standard whereby the apostrophe is eliminated.

There are several legends among native American tribes about the Devils Tower; the beginnings of the stories vary (adventurous boys, silly girls, lost children) but they all end with a giant bear leaving claw marks on the tower.  It is actually lava rock that cooled and remained in place while the surrounding and overlying rock eroded away.
