Meet Vic, patient #331 in our ongoing study of the spread of the zombie plague via geocaching. Vic was an electrical engineer who specialized in avionics design. He was extremely smart (some even speculated that he was a genius), although he was sometimes hard to understand as he always grumbled the last three words of every sentence. He was considered curmudgeonly, but really he just did not like to be around people at all. During his free time he preferred to be by himself in his workshop, working on electronics, building his newest invention, or geocaching. He particularly liked to design and build gadget and arduino based geocaches to hide for others to find (when he was not around, of course).
We believe that Vic contracted the zombie plague from Emory, patient #181 in our study. Emory, who had just got infected with the plague, was trying to be the first to find on one of Vic’s newly published geocaches that involved a motherboard, a flashing emergency response light, and a plane propeller. When Emory could not figure out how to find the log, he Google searched Vic until he found his home address. He went to Vic’s home (much to Vic’s absolute horror) and was so insistent that Vic show him how to work the geocache that Vic only agreed because he feared that Emory would never leave. Vic showed Emory that by pressing down on just the right places on the motherboard, the propeller would begin to turn, which would power the light, which then revealed the location of the log. Emory was so excited that he hugged Vic, which made Vic cringe and want to die. Within a week Vic sort of got his wish, as he joined the rank and file of the living dead.
This travel bug is part of a larger study to take a closer look at how the zombie plague might propagate if the primary vector for spreading the disease was geocaching. Please visit the following website for further details, and a visualization of how the disease has propagated thus far based on the movement and discovery of this and other infected Zombie travel bugs:
