About This Item

PATIENT # 308 - MAEVE

Meet Maeve, patient #308 in our ongoing study of the spread of the zombie plague via geocaching.  Maeve was a fermentation science and technology major, which she hoped to use to develop her own line of craft brewed lagers, stouts, and beer.  Mauve had extremely advanced taste buds, and she would taste any object (edible and non-edible) and perfectly pair it with a fermented brewed beverage. She also had extremely good eyesight, which was helpful in her hobby of geocaching.  Maeve’s favorite type of geocaches were those that had special camoflauge applied to make them blend in with their surroundings, as her eagle eyes were able to sight even the best camoflauged geocache.

We believe that Maeve contracted the zombie plague from Liam, patient #305 in our study. Maeve and Liam were both part of a geocaching club at Trinity College, and they were part of a group of cachers that decided to go work and geocache for the summer in Ocean City, Maryland.   Liam had contracted a unique strain of the virus that lay dormant within Liam before the symptoms manifested at the end of the summer, yet seemed to have been contagious the entire time. Liam had a tiny mole on his arm that he used as a Rorschach test for potential girlfriends; if he liked what they thought his mole resembled, he asked them on a second date. Geocache logs reveal that when they first arrived in Maryland, Liam asked a few women, including Maeve, on a date to look for a geocache.  While on their geocaching date, Liam asked Maeve what she thought his mole looked like.  Liam wrote in his geocache log that Maeve replied that she had no clue what the mole looked like, but after she licked it said that it would pair nicely with a dark lager. It must have been love at first lick, because the two dated for the entire summer as they geocached around Ocean City.  On the first date, Maeve contracted the dormant version of the virus, and unknowingly spread the zombie plague the entire summer.  Maeve did not begin to show symptoms of the virus until she returned to Ireland at the end of the summer.  Upon her return, she found that her exceptionally advanced taste buds suddenly only wanted to pair lagers, stouts, and beer with brains.

This travel bug is part of a larger study to take a closer look at how the zombie plague might propagate if the primary vector for spreading the disease was geocaching.  Please visit the following website for further details, and a visualization of how the disease has propagated thus far based on the movement and discovery of this and other infected Zombie travel bugs:
