About This Item

NU Travel Bug

It's 8/23/16 and I just defended my doctoral dissertation!  In celebration of being Dr. robin, I'm putting this travel bug into circulation to go where it will go and see what it will see.  I'm headed on a road trip myself, to a professorship in California.  I'm dropping a state-themed travel bug in each state I visit.  This is my first - Illinois!  Please take photos of me wherever I go.

Located in Harlingen, TX, This stunning outdoor sculpture is the original from which the monument in Arlington, Virginia was cast. It depicts the raising of the US flag over Iwo Jima on Feb. 23, 1945, during World War II. It is over 100 feet high and weighs 130 tons.

The sculpture sits on the parade grounds of the Marine Military Academy, the only place outside of Washington, D.C., where proper honors are rendered with battalion-size dress blue parades.

Cpl Harlon H. Block is the bottom man in the sculpture. Cpl Block is from the Harlingen, TX area. He was killed in battle shortly after the flag raising. Block's gravesite resides behind the sculpture.

More information about the sculpture can be found at: http://www.mma-tx.org/about-us/iwo-jima-monument/
