Current Goal

My mission is to experience historical, scenic, quirky, and otherwise cool locales in these nifty fifty United States (or beyond)! I would also like to visit Berkeley, California and St. Paul, Minnesota...but no rush...just a dream of mine.

About This Item

Specimen

The Star Spangled Banner, our nation's National Anthem, is adapted from a poem by Francis Scott Key entitled Defence of Fort M'Henry (or McHenry). Key penned those hallowed words after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry at Baltimore Harbor in the War of 1812. Legend has it that he was moved to write the poem after seeing the large American flag waving proudly over the fort through the smoke and chaos of battle. The poem was set to the tune The Anacreontic Song by John Stafford Smith, and was soon dubbed The Star Spangled Banner. It wasn't until 1931 that President Warren Harding signed a bill officially adopting The Star Spangled Banner as the National Anthem of the United States.

This Travel Bug commemorates our stately National Anthem and our nation’s proud history. Get out and explore all she has to offer through geocaching, and share your experiences through this Travel Bug!

God Bless You, and God Bless America!

Launched "Star Spangled Banner" at Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda, Illinois. I used to go to the Lake County Discovery Museum located here, but just learned that the Forest Preserve District is moving the museum to their HQ in Libertyville. Sad. Such a nice setting here.
