JD Tippit was born in Clarksville, Texas. He had no first or middle name, only the letters “JD”. He was a decorated WWII veteran (awarded the Bronze Star while serving in the Army Airborne Infantry in Germany). His DPD badge # was 848.

A marker was finally placed for Officer Tippit in 2012 at the site of his encounter with Lee Harvey Oswald. The marker was placed during a ceremony that his wife attended. A year after the marker was placed, as part of the 50th memorial activities for President Kennedy, Officer Tippit’s wife was finally presented with a folded U.S. flag as is customary for officers that are killed in the line of duty. She had never received a flag, which was a wrong that took half a century to correct.

At the time of his death, Officer Tippit was married and had 3 young children. Within 2 months of his death, the American Police Hall of Fame posthumously awarded him the Medal of Valor. He later received several more awards for his public service.

Upon his death, he was interred at the Laurel Land Cemetery.  In one of the more uplifting stories from these sad days, Officer Tippit’s family received an unusual amount of support and well-deserved attention following his death. JFK’s brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and new President Lyndon Johnson called Mrs. Tippit to offer condolences. Mrs. Tippit also received a special hand-written note from Jackie Kennedy, which the Kennedy family has only now allowed to be read in public. The Kennedys allowed it to be read for a Tom Brokow television program recognizing the significance of the events 50 years later. In one of the greatest acts of kindness, Abraham Zapruder donated the first $25,000 he received for selling his video of the Kennedy assassination. He gave this money to Mrs. Tippit, which helped start a wave of donations to the Tippiits, eventually reaching nearly $650,000.

This is the ramp that Ruby took on that day to get to the basement. I wonder if that is why there are so many signs that say no pedestrian entrance?

On Sunday morning November 24, 1963, just two days after the Kennedy assassination, a crowd of reporters was gathered in the basement of this building as they awaited Oswald’s transfer to the jail. The transfer was supposed to occur around 10am, but Police Chief Curry was still upstairs interviewing Oswald. Meanwhile, Jack Ruby, owner of the Carousel Club just a few blocks down Commerce Street was finishing his morning laundry and then headed to Western Union to transfer $25 to one of his employees in Fort Worth, the transfer occurred and Ruby left the Western Union office at 11:17am. Outside on the street, he saw the crowd gathered just a block away. He entered the basement entrance and mingled with the press unnoticed until just moments later, when he lunged forward with handgun drawn right as Oswald approached. Two photographers famously captured the scene as it unfolded, as Ruby shot Oswald at point blank range in the abdomen. Oswald was placed onto a stretcher and rushed to Parkland Hospital, where he soon died in surgery.

Jack Ruby’s days overseeing his nightclub were over. He spent the next two years in jail until he finally died from complications of lung cancer.

    #12 Love Field
3210 Love Field Dr, Dallas, TX 75235

Love Field serves as the beginning and the sad end to JFK’s “Day in Dallas”. Just a few short hours after landing in Dallas, Kennedy returned to Love Field in the back of a hearse. His casket was lifted up into Air Force One, as his newly widowed bride stood by to witness the swearing in of Lyndon B. Johnson aboard the aircraft. This was the only time a U.S. President took the oath of office in the state of Texas. During the proceedings Jackie appeared to be in a state of shock. As new President, LBJ placed a call onboard the aircraft to John F. Kennedy’s mother, Rose Kennedy, and delivered the news. When the plane reached Washington, D.C., Jackie was met by Robert Kennedy, still wearing her pink dress and hose, both extensively covered in her husband’s blood. Leaving for the Texas trip, she had originally planned to celebrate her children’s birthdays. John, Jr. and Caroline were having their 3rd and 6th birthdays over the next 4 days. Instead, Jackie Kennedy spent much of that time planning for a funeral and planning burial arrangements.
