About This Item

The 'Barnsley Pals' travelbug.jpg

Thus travelled the 'Barnsley Pals' in June/July 1916 ending their long journey close to the village of Serre in Northern France. This was on the front-line of the famous 'Western Front'.
At 0730hrs. on 1st July 1916 began the ill-fated Battle of the Somme, which resulted in massive casualties for all the units involved, not least the 'Pals', having dreadful casualties throughout their two battalions.

The purpose of the bug is really to honour & commemorate those fellows who gave up so much in the belief that they were fighting for a better world for the future.

It consists of a travelbug tally and a keyring containing a photograph and other details of my Grandfather, who served as a stretcher bearer in World War One on the Western Front, and survived the conflict from 1916 to 1918.

There is an obvious mistake on the keyring that I wonder if you can spot?
Let me know by email and I will confirm your findings.

During the Second World War this area was the Ashley Walk Bombing Range. The RAF brought back evidence that the Germans were building vast structures of reinforced concrete to house their submarines. This knowledge led to a massive reinforced concrete raft, 6ft thick, 79ft by 70ft being built of high quality concrete, for the purpose of testing. It is supported on five equidistant walls 6ft high on a foundation 20 inches thick. In 1942 this cost £250,000!

During the clear up of the area, after the war, this structure proved to be indestructible and so had to be buried. Today it is marked as a Tumulus on an OS map.

As you walk to the top of the ‘Pens’ you will be able to see some of the reinforced concrete. When at the top look around and you will see many small depressions, these are the remains of bomb craters.
