This Leap Year Geo-Tag commemorates 2016 as a quadrennial occasion. It also celebrates the very first event/geocache created by us, which will be held on February 29th. It symbolizes a new phase and direction in our geocaching life. The mission of this tag is to travel to events and share the special status of being significant at least every 4 years!
In 2012, we missed our opportunity to log a cache or event on February 29th due to a large snowstorm. Where we lived in Washburn, WI we received 18 or more inches of snow and were not able to drive for 2 days, as the plows could not get to our street. We were determined this Leap Year to not miss logging a find as well as to not have to drive to far in case of another winter storm!
Leap Day Snowstorm and Blizzard: Feb 28-29, 2012 The storm became a full-fledged blizzard in Duluth by sunrise on February 29, with visibilities dropping to near zero with heavy snow. Winds were averaging 45mph with gusts to 55mph in the Duluth area with gusts to 68mph on elevated bridges and roads in the Downtown Duluth area. source: http://climate.umn.edu/doc/journal/leap_day_blizzard120228_29.htm
