My mission is to travel to Europe by the next leap year in 2020. Visiting Italy, the birthplace of the leap year, would be a super bonus. After that, I suppose other continents would be cool too, I guess. Ciao!
The Roman general Julius Caesar introduced the first leap year over 2000 years ago. The establishment of leap years enabled the true rotation of the Earth to fit to a Gregorian calendar. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242189 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds – to circle once around the Sun. If we didn't add a day to the calendar in Feburary every (nearly) four years, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by around 24 days!
