About This Item

Firefighter Carletti was a member of the Crooksville Volunteer Fire Department in Crooksville, Ohio. On February 5, 1998, Firefighter Carletti and Firefighter Theisen responded to a basment fire. Upon entering the basement firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. In the process of moving around in the structure, the firefighters water line was pinched off. The Firefighters were not aware of this. When they began to pull ceiling tiles, the room experienced a flashover. Of the 5 firefighters in the basement when the flashover occured, two escaped, one was rescued, and two were killed. An adjacent room, which had not been discovered by the firefighters was fully involved with fire and spread to the other room when the ceiling tiles were removed. Repeated radio requests for help and water were recieved from the basement but rescuers we unable to reach the firefighters in distress due to severe heat and fire. Firefighter Carletti died from a crushing injury and Firefighter Theisen died of asphyxiation and burns. Firefighter Theisen was also a career firefighter in Westerville, Ohio. Firefighter Carletti died at the age of 43. Firefighter Theisen died at the age of 29.
