Aimé Bonpland (1773–1858) was a French naturalist and botanist who became world-famous primarily as Alexander von Humboldt’s traveling companion. Bonpland accompanied Humboldt on his legendary expedition through South and Central America from 1799 to 1804. While Humboldt often focused on physical measurements and geographical data, Bonpland’s main contribution lay in botany: during the journey, he collected and described around 6,000 plant species, of which about 3,500 were completely unknown to European science at the time. After returning to Europe, he published monumental works on the flora of the New World together with Humboldt. Today, the two naturalists are regarded as the true “discoverers” of South and Central America.
