Krabbegat is the carnival name of Bergen op Zoom during the Bergse Vastenavend. Vastenavend, as mentioned in the celebration of Carnival in the city, has its own character and style in Bergen op Zoom. This style originates from the Burgundian carnival celebrated in West Brabant, which differs from the Rhine-style variant, which is celebrated in Maastricht. The name "The Krabbegat" strikes back on the 'Meekrap', a plant used to be used as a raw material for the red dye alizarine and widely grown in Bergen op Zoom. Nowadays, this cultivation is again for making biofriendly dyes. However, the symbol of the crab conception is not the plant, but the animal that is identical in the pronunciation is the crab. A resident of Krabbegat is called a crab.
Wana
Wana is the witch of Reimerswaal, a reference to the folklore story Jan Without Fear. Contrary to the principle, no one is asked anyone to picture Wana every year. Instead, she is only occasionally interpreted during childhood celebrations. In addition, during the fastenavend there is a big picture of the witch on the Grote Markt that plays a vital role in the Falling of the Crow. After the closure, the prince goes to the image of Wana, which was placed on the Grote Markt after the entry. Here around 23:45 all the crabs gather. After unloading three shots, the prince drops the crow, which appears on Wana's image. With this symbolic death of the crowd, the end of the fastenavend has been recorded. Once again, all the attendants make the leap and afterwards the party is finally over.
Wana usually flies on her broom in the Krabbegat and surrounding area. However, she wants to see some more of the world. Wana would like to visit all major Carnival celebrations around the world to experience some energy and experience the crabs in Bergen op Zoom for some time.
