About This Item

Captain Oates

I would love to travel as far NORTH and SOUTH as possible, alternatively lots of pictures of me in SNOW!

I am named after Captain Lawrence Edward Grace "Titus" Oates (17 March 1880 – 17 March 1912) an English army officer, and later an Antarctic explorer, who died along with Robert Falcon Scott during the Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole.

Oates, afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, walked from his tent into a blizzard. His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice when, aware that his ill health was compromising his three companions' chances of survival, he chose certain death.

According to Scott's diary, before Oates exited the tent and walked to his death, he uttered the words "I am just going outside and may be some time."

The attched keyring was purchased from the Polar Museum in Cambridge - Well worth a visit and full of Scott's expedition artefacts. The keyring shows the expedition's ship "Terra Nova", photographed in December 1910 by Herbert Ponting.
