Current Goal

The expression "spend a penny" refers to the (former) use of coin operated locks on public toilets. It was used mostly in the UK and mostly by women (men's urinals were free of charge). Such locks were first introduced at a public toilet outside the Royal Exchange, London in the 1850s. The first recorded citation of the expression is in H. Lewis's 'Strange Story', 1945: "'Us girls,' she said, 'are going to spend a penny!'" 'Spend a penny' is not used as often now, partly because charges have changed and partly because it seems rather outdated. The writing was on the wall for this phrase, so to speak, from 1977, when the Daily Telegraph printed an article headed "2p to spend a penny".

About This Item

The goal for this coin is to have its picture taken by a women's public toilet sign! This coin is part of the Geocoinclub competition (see geocoinclub.com). Once you have uploaded the picture, please take the coin to another cache. This coin is also competing with SPEND A PENNY - Men to see which coin visits the most bathroom signs. So come on ladies, it's time to spend a penny! Cheers, The Ax

NOTE: (1/13/07) - This coin may have been flushed!!! I will reissue the coin, so the competition can still continue.

This coin was last seen in Florida at the Seeker#2 cache on November 28, 2006. I have reissued the coin and marked it as "Gone Dark" (missing) per Jack Bauer's instructions at CTU (see TV series 24). It is Jack's belief that Spend A Penny - Woman refuses to communicate due to a high level security risk. She may also be pursuing another mission based on misinformation. As a member of Jack's team, your additional assignment is to take this coin to another cache.

I know this is asking a lot of you (take pictures of bathroom signs, being a member of Jack Bauer's team, and placing the coin in another cache.) However, your country is depending on you! Thanks for your help.
