PLEASE KEEP THIS GEOCOIN MOVING!! It doesn't much care where it goes, as long as it gets there We own this, but have sent it out into the world so that others can enjoy it, collect its icon and then pass it on to another cache. If you can post a photo of it on its travels, that would be great Discoveries are always welcome. Thanks to all who help our geocoins and TBs!
There is some really nice detail on this coin. An astrolabe is a device that was used from ancient times through the Renaiisance, for navigation and surveying, as well as by astrologers. If one knew one's latitude, local time could be derived, and vice-versa; this is just one example of its usages. The modern planisphere is derived from the astrolabe, and many early mechanical clocks used the astrolabe as a starting point for their construction, such that the faces of the earliest clocks often looked like astrolabes. Also, the quadrant, another navigational device, is basically a quarter ("quadrant") of a full astrolabe.
