Hello again, race fans, this is Howard Cootsell broadcasting to you live from the finish line for the Global HQ Duck Dash event. I am joined in the broadcasting booth today by my good friend, Duck Engberg. We also have some special guests with us tonight. To my left is famous sprinter, Quackie Joyner-Kersee, and on my right is speedster Danica Quackrick. Welcome, Quackie and Danica, it’s nice to have you here with us.
Thank you Howard! I have to say that as a sprinter, I’m not accustomed to long races like this one. It takes a totally different mindset. But I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen here during the race.
Why is that, Quackie?
Well, to start with, there was no race course. Aside from the team competition, for which there is no medal, it was every duck for themselves out there, and there were essentially no rules. They went a million different directions. And yet, somehow, all these ducks managed to navigate, on schedule, towards the finish line.
That is impressive, Quackie. Danica, what are your thoughts with what you’ve seen?
Well, Howard, as you know I’m more of a distance racer, so I’ve been watching the ducks that have been pacing themselves. Many of the competitors on Team Sloth have been deceptively steady, making up ground where other teams have burned out and taken longer breaks. I think this is really a race that will be won in the pits.
How do you mean, Danica?
Well, Duck, no duck can compete at top speed for 30 straight days. There will be highs and lows, and moments of frenetic activity. It’s important to make sure you limit your downtime recuperating, and the Sloth competitors don’t need much downtime. They’re down even when they’re up, so they hardly take any breaks at all. It’s a very effective strategy.
That’s fascinating, Danica.
Yes, Howard, and I really believe the ducks that will win are those that have taken advantage of opportunities. There are several ducks, for example, that have spent their time going from event to event, meeting as many geocachers as possible at each event. They’ve really been racking up the numbers.
That’s true, Quackie, and there are others who have hitched a ride with the supercachers, and visited over 1000 caches over the last 30 days.
Absolutely, Duck. That’s exactly what I mean. It’s hard to compete with that kind of tenacity and opportunity.
Just a minute, folks, I believe the first competitors are just starting to come into view. There’s a roar coming from the crowd….
To be concluded…
