De stripserie begint als een kinderstrip, voor jeugd vanaf tien jaar. De eerste verhalen worden geschreven door Phiny Dick, Toonders echtgenote, en getekend door Marten Toonder. Vrijwel gelijktijdig verschijnt Tom Poes ook in Zweden en in Tsjecho-Slowakije. Aanvankelijk is Tom Poes de hoofdfiguur in de strip. In het derde avontuur, ‘Tom Poes in de tovertuin’, stapt heer Olivier B. Bommel de verhalen binnen. Met uitzondering van het 17e avontuur wordt heer Bommel een vast karakter in de strips, en groeit na verloop van tijd uit tot de hoofdpersoon. De reeks dagstrips wordt daarom ook wel aangeduid met de naam ‘Bommelsaga’.
The comic series starts as a children's comic, for youth from the age of ten. The first stories are written by Phiny Dick, Toonders wife, and designed by Marten Toonder. Tom Poes appears almost simultaneously in Sweden and in Czechoslovakia. Tom Poes was initially the main character in the comic. In the third adventure, "Tom Poes in the Magic Garden," Mr. Olivier B. Bommel enters the stories. With the exception of the 17th adventure, Mr. Bommel becomes a permanent character in the comics, and over time grows into the main character. The series of daily comics is therefore also referred to as "Bommelsaga".
