The Manchester Bee has become a symbol of solidarity since the tragic event in Manchester UK at the Ariana Grande concert.
However, the slender worker bee started out and remains a symbol of the hardworking and diligent folk of Manchester during the Industrial Revolution, where the cotton mills were often decribed as a 'hive of activity' with the workers always as busy as bees. HMS Manchester was nicknamed 'The Busy Bee' and our Bee is a symbol that we Mancunians are very proud of - not only because of our industrial past - but because we are still known as 'grafters'.
Manchester City centre itself has worker bee symbols everywhere should you care to look, they're on bollards and lamp posts, even the dustbins. Boddington's, a Mancunian brewery has two bees printed on to its beer cans and the beautiful Manchester Town Hall has bees embazoned on its walls, windows and furnishings and since 1842 - the worker bee has graced the Manchester coat of arms.
This Manchester Bee, set free by a true Mancunian, is on a mission to visit as many places on its way to Manchester in New Hampshire, U.S.A and then to visit many more places before coming home to Manchester UK.
Please treasure Bertie Bee whilst in your care. Perhaps you would care to send us pictures of him on his travels?
We would very much love to see where he flies.
Thank you for taking care of our Bertie, the Manchester Bee.
