Quaker merchant John Lynch established a ferry across the James River in 1757, and the Virginia General Assembly issued a charter to the Town of Lynchburg in 1786. Lynchburg became one of the largest tobacco markets in the world, and served as a major hospital center during the Civil War. The area now hosts a diverse economy featuring education, finance, healthcare, nuclear technology, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and light manufacturing. The Lynchburg MSA has a population of 225,382.
