To visit America's tourist attractions, large and small.
Back in 1946 a former Navy frogman, Newton Perry, came to Florida to conduct experiments involving breathing underwater using compressed air supplied through hoses. He perfected the technique at Weeki Wachee Springs and the rest, as they say, is history. In 1947 an "underwater" theater was built and live mermaid shows were presented to the public. Over 50 years later the shows go on, even though newer and more sophisticated tourist attractions have emerged to vie for the visitors' dollars. Today there are around 19 active mermaid performers at Weeki Wachee who earn their tails after completing auditions and a year of on-the-job training. Having to hold your breath underwater for over two minutes while performing isn't something one takes lightly or does easily. The occasional errant alligator sometimes adds interest as well. Eventually though even mermaids retire and strike out for other adventure. Our Weeki Wachee Mermaid TB would like to travel a bit and is especially interested in visiting other amusement parks and tourist attractions across the country, no matter how large or modest. If you find her, take her to visit an attraction and tell us about it. Of course, photos are always appreciated. Perhaps one day the Weeki Wachee Mermaid will return to Florida's Nature Coast and truly "retire."

Sorry she hasn't moved in a LONG time. The circumstances of her kidnap and recreation need not be told. A mermaid is in the loose.

Over the past year I have done everything but travel to Iowa and retrieve The Weeki Wachee Mermaid. Within the next few weeks I am going to do what I can to get the Weeki Wachee Mermaid back on the road. I see that it is 'in my hands' everytime I log a cache and it is getting to me. She will travel again.
