Harold Godwinson
King of England from 5 January 1066 to 14 October 1066
Harold became King on 5 January at the invitation of the Witan, the ruling council with the support of Edward the Confessor. Harold expected Duke William all summer to arrive by ship to fight for the crown and he had his troops stationed along the coast. By mid-September, William had not arrived and the “fighting season” was over. When King Harold heard that King Harald of Norway had arrived in England with 200 ships, Harold withdrew his troops and rushed to the North of England. He took Harold Hardrada by surprise at Stamford Bridge and massacred the Norwegians, Then King Harold got the news that William and the Normans had arrived and he and his troops rushed south again and met Williams’s troops at Battle where the Battle of Hastings took place. Harold got shot in the eye with an arrow and the Normans won. Many stories of Harold’s burial exist. He may have been buried at Bosham, Waltham Abbey or even Bishop Stortford. There is even a story that Harold survived the Battle of Hastings and was taken from the battlefield by an old lady who took him to Chester where he lived out his days as a hermit. It is most likely that Harold was buried on the seashore in an unmarked grave as William did not want him to be considered a martyr.
