Edgar Aetheling
King of England from 14 October to 25 December 1066
Edgar was a child of between 7 and 13 years old. He was the next legitimate heir to the throne of England and was elected by the Witan. He did sign several documents in the capacity of King but was never actually crowned King. Kings were crowned on particular dates of the year and the next date was 25 December. William had won the Battle of Hastings so he was going to be King. William the Conqueror did not get rid of Edgar as he was a friend of William’s son. Edgar was sent to Normandy to train as a knight and he went o to fight in the Crusades. He never reclaimed the throne and may have lived into his nineties.
