Current Goal

As the aurora borealis, I glow in the dark with a greenish colour. It is my mission to light myself up in the green light of the  aurora borealis some place in Norway, Sweden and Finland. After I have arrived there, please make a photo of me and the northern light and log it. My first mission will be completed once I have been photographed with the aurora borealis in these 3 (three) different countries.

After this first mission, please send me back to the Netherlands where the owner will retrieve me!

About This Item

The aurora borealis (plural: auroras or aurorae), also referred to as polar light or northern light, is a natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in the high-latitude regions around the Arctic.

Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind. These disturbances are regularly strong enough to alter the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma. These particles, mainly electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere).

The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emits light of varying color and complexity. The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions, is also dependent on the amount of acceleration imparted to the precipitating particles. Precipitating protons generally produce optical emissions as incident hydrogen atoms after gaining electrons from the atmosphere. Proton auroras are usually observed at lower latitudes.

The word "aurora" is derived from the name of the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, who traveled from east to west announcing the coming of the sun.
