This geocoin is in the shape of a scallop shell, the symbol of St. James (Iago, in Spanish). The Saint is thought to be buried in western Spain and the path to his shrine is one taken by pilgrims for centuries. Because of this, there are many stories about the path (or paths). One of them is that in 1779, the American statesman John Adams was on his way to Paris, where he hoped to borrow funds to finance the Revolution. His ship, proving to be of doubtful seaworthiness, left him in western Spain, and he went overland from there, taking the pilgrim way in reverse. It must have been a challenging way to get to Paris!
