Current Goal

Dr. Albert would like to explore the world! Namely, he would like to see places of scientific interest (museums, planetariums, observatories, etc.) and places that reflect his goal of nuclear disarmament and global peace. His end goal in North America is Princeton, New Jersey, and from there he would like to see Europe (his birthplace of Ulm; Munich, where he spent his childhood; Bern, where he formed so many of his ideas; Zurich, Berlin and Prague, where he taught, among many places) and from there the world. Please take photos of Dr. Albert as you show him the sights! I would love for Dr. Albert to eventually be reunited with me in a cache near the University of Washington in Seattle.

About This Item

Dr. Albert and class

Dr. Albert, after being dragged away from a life of scholarly leisure at the Tattered Cover in Denver, is an action figure of the renowned scientist Dr. Albert Einstein. Born in 1879 in Ulm, Germany, he spent his childhood in Munich. After many academic difficulties (!), Einstein relocated to Bern in 1903 and found work in a patent office as a third class technical expert. It was during this time that Einstein began to publish his revolutionary publications that would change the world of physics, if not the world. 1905 was Einstein’s year of brilliance, and he published three papers that would spark a new scientific revolution. The first dealt with the electromagnetic radiation of light, the second was his theory of special relativity, and the third showing matter and energy were equivalent. Einstein taught at a variety of universities across Europe for the next several years, his next great insight coming in 1915, with the publication of his general theory of relativity, which overthrew the Newtonian ideas of space and time. Einstein received the Nobel Prize in 1921 for his earlier ideas on the electromagnetic radiation of light, and soon after he began to travel the world, seeing such places as the United States, Japan, Paris, Palestine and South America.
In 1932, Einstein offered a post at Princeton, and accepted. He departed Germany, never to return as the Nazis took power in 1933. Einstein became a US citizen, and spent the remainder of his life working on a grand unified theory and nuclear disarmament. He died on April 18, 1955, in Trenton, New Jersey.
