If you’ve ever cached in Victoria, Australia you’ll be aware of the great range of caches on offer. Our community volunteer reviewer is Bunjil, who does a tremendous job in policing the regulations, improving cache quality and mentoring cache owners. Today you went on a trip to Cromarty, a village situated at the tip of the Black Isle on the southern shore of the mouth of Cromarty Firth. The village is dominated by an oil rig just off shore and they’re several more in the Firth. Lots of the buildings are made from the local red sandstone. 🛢️

Welcome to Scotland. After a few hours of flight delays, you made it to Inverness and then onto Avoch on the Black Isle. That name conjures up images of somewhere dark and bleak but it’s actually neither an island nor is it black. Supposedly the name comes from the rich, dark colour of the soil. It’s a small piece of land, with agriculture and forestry in the centre, and these lovely little villages on the coastline. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

And another event…. Today was to celebrate Middlesex Day. Middlesex is a historic county in southeast England. Its area is almost entirely within the wider urbanised area of London and mostly within the ceremonial county of Greater London, with small sections in neighbouring ceremonial counties. Middlesex county's name derives from its origin as a homeland for the Middle Saxon people in the early Middle Ages. The 16 May date was chosen in remembrance of the heroic Middlesex Regiment. On that day in May 1811, the Middlesex held back the might of Napoleon at the battle of Albuhera, Spain. 🛡️

Another event for you, this time in the historic The George Inn, the only surviving galleried coaching inn left in London. A pub has existed on the site since medieval times and was situated next door to an inn where Chaucer set The Canterbury Tales. In 1677, it was rebuilt after a serious fire destroyed most of Southwark. 🧙‍♀️

Very busy at work at the moment but I ran out early to get to an event near Fleet Street, London. It was by the statue of Hodge, the cat of Samuel Johnson (1709 - 1784). Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography calls him "arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history". Johnson's loved his cat which was different from the usual views held by others of the eighteenth century. 😾
