This “Old Malaria” travel bug wants to travel the world far and wide! But would especially love to visit the U.S. states and locations from the Lonesome Dove cattle drive. The states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana. Specific stops from the cattle drive it’d be great for this travel bug to visit would be: San Antonio, TX; Austin, TX; Ogallala, NE; and Miles City, MT.
If you happen to find this travel bug, please remember to log it, as we’re looking forward to following its adventures!
"Old Malaria" was the main horse of Augustus "Gus" McCrae in Larry McMurtry’s epic Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the old west, Lonesome Dove. The novel was adapted into a popular TV mini-series in 1989. The story follows a cattle drive led by Woodrow Call and Gus McCrae from south Texas to Montana.

Old Malaria visited Nocona, Texas today, near the Red River Station marker. This was where the Chisolm Trail crossed the Red River. Though not on the Goodnight-Loving Trail, it is believed that an actual incident at this crossing was the basis for the water moccasin scene in the Lonesome Dove series. The marker had to be relocated to the museum, as the site is now private property and the owner doesn't like visitors.

Dropped Old Malaria into this cache for a visit. "While the trailhead of the Hat Creek Outfit’s route begins in the fictional Lonesome Dove, a small town at the Texas-Mexico border, the real starting point for the book is in Southlake, about 25 miles from Fort Worth. Here stands the church from which the novel derives its title." and "Back in 1987, McMurtry told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he saw the name Lonesome Dove Baptist Church painted on the side of a bus while he was eating at the Ponder Steakhouse. “I knew Lonesome Dove would make a great title,” he said. In the preface of the 1985 edition, he even wrote that after many years of writer’s block, he saw the name and went straight back to his house and began writing." I just realized that I've held on to Old Malaria for too long. I have plans to drop him off closer to the Goodnight-Loving Trail before the end of July. In the meantime, I took him to Frisco, Texas and photographed him at a couple of stages of The Shawnee Trail Adventure Lab, and plan to have him visit GC8Z7CE. Posting a couple of photos of Old Malaria here. He's tiny! Can you spot him?
