r Z 04 and Gr Z 04/14 fuze
45 mm percussion fuze-detonator, double effect with delay or without delay, initial model 1904 and 1914 modification, for high explosive shells.
Brass or zinc alloy fuze, with steel cap and gaine. The
GR Z 04 was an evolution of the
Gr Z 96/04 fuze, including as this latter :
- a selectable optional delay (approximately 1 second) based on two identical parallel graze percussion systems designed on a cylindrical graze pellet bearing a starter and a static percussion pin transverse bridge, one directly connected to the detonator, and the other one through a compressed gunpowder pellet delay,
- a graze arming system based on an axial and massive mobile graze pellet bearing a starter, a percussion pin protected by a tulip spring cap, and two big compressed gunpowder pellets blocking the percussion systems, inspired from the 'Dopp Z 92' fuze, and secured by a two rods safety pin,
- an evolution of the exploder safety masking at rest the primer into an isolated detonation room, but with a static primer and a mobile detonator charge.
The main difference with its predecessor was the delay selection method, not anymore mechanically by acting on a selection stud and rod, but pyrotechnically by rotation of a disc looking like the time-setting discs of the revolving discs time systems, only bearing the markings 'O/V' (Ohne Verzögerung - without delay - let both systems activated) and 'm.V.' (mit Verzögerung - with delay - deactivating the undelayed percussion system). Depending on the disc gunpowder ring position, the graze arming system flame was communicated either to the gunpowder pellet only liberating the movements of the stem blocking the delayed percussion system ('m.V.), or to both the gunpowder pellets liberating the movements of both delayed and non-delayed percussion systems ('o.V.').
The Gr Z 04 fuze was intensively used. It was mounted on the high explosive shells, false head high explosive shells, smoke and gaz shells of the :
- 10cm K, 10cm K97, 10cm K04 and 10cm K14 guns
