Mainzelmännchen (Mainz, Germany, Europe)
http://www.zdf-werbefernsehen.de/angebot/mainzelmaennchen/die-mainzelmaennchen/
In the year 1963, ZDF (the second official German TV station) was looking for a way, to visually separate commercials from the actual TV programs.
Graphic designer Wolf Gerlach consequently created short comics with funny, little, hat-wearing men.
The inspiration for these little men came from the “Heinzelmännchen” of German folklore.
The “Heinzelmännchen” are mysterious, little helpers who, during the night, do all the work for good people.
Because the ZDF station is located in Mainz, the little creatures were called “Mainzelmännchen” instead of “Heinzelmännchen.”
The six “Mainzelmännchen” are lazy Anton, industrious Berti, artistic Conni, clever Det, mischievous Edi and athletic Fritzchen.
They all look a lot like a German garden gnome, particularly because of their pointed caps.
The capers of the “Mainzelmännchen” are very brief, nowadays right around three seconds long.
The small gnomes cannot speak, but they often produce emotional exclamations.
Since 1963, more than 45,000 “Mainzelmännchen” spots have been created.
A collection of various “Mainzelmännchen” spots is found here:

The “Mainzelmännchen” are so popular that they are part of German TV culture by now.
In 2003, the “Mainzelmännchen” were modernized a little, much to the chagrin of many faithful TV watchers.
Their clothing and their possessions were adapted to a more modern world.
Now they have cell phones and notebooks, instead of telephones and note pads.
Various children’s programs were also created based on the ZDF “Mainzelmännchen.”

Leider hatte ich hier keine Zeit zum Cachen. Daher gibt's nur ein Erinnerungsfoto vom Mainzer Hbf, und der TB reist wieder zurück mit mir nach Freiburg.
