About This Item

Owl of Athens Personal Geocoin

                                                                       Athenian tetradrachm

The front side of this personal wooden geocoin features an owl, similar to the ones which appeared on Athenian tetradrachms (photo above). These silver coins were struck more or less from the beginning of the5th century BC till the end of the 3rd century BC. They were very popular and they were the Euro and the dollar of Ancient Greece. In the mid-fifth century BC they represented the value of a four days’ pay for a skilled labourer or for a hoplite soldier, or two days’ pay for a sculptor working on a public building. You could buy about 37 liters of local wine with one such coin while a cow cost somewhere between 6 and 13 tetradrachms.

Były one niezwykle popularne i można nawet powiedzieć, ży były swego rodzaju dolarem i euro antycznej Grecji.
