CZ: Plesnivec alpský (Leontopodium alpinum), též protěž alpská, je jedna z nejznámějších horských květin. Německý název Edelweiß pochází z německých slov edel (vznešený) a weiß (bílý). Tato vzácná květina se nachází ve vzdálených horských oblastech Alp a Karpat. Je považována za symbol Alp a je také národní květinou Rakouska. Podle lidové tradice je darování této květiny milované bytosti slibem oddanosti.
EN: Leontopodium nivale, commonly called edelweiss, is a well-known mountain flower. The flower's common name derives from the German word "Edelweiß", which is a compound of edel (noble) and weiß (white). As a scarce, short-lived flower found in remote mountain areas, the plant has been used as a symbol for alpinism, for rugged beauty and purity associated with the Alps and Carpathians, and as a national symbol, especially of Romania, Austria, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Switzerland. According to folk tradition, giving this flower to a loved one is a promise of dedication.
