To "visit" other lighthouses or to just be by the water is fine.
The second in our This Little Light travel bugs, 30 Mile Point Lighthouse is located 30 miles east of the Niagara River or 50 miles west of Rochester on Lake Ontario in Golden Hill State Park, New York. Built in 1875 after at least four ships sank in the waters off the point in the 200 years prior to its construction, it operated with a Third Order Fresnel lens until the Coast Gaurd decommissioned it in 1958 and then was placed on the National and New York Registry of Historical Places. It is still operational but with an automatic beacon. The "Friends of Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse," a nonprofit organization, maintains the grounds today and it is one of the few lighthouses in which you can spend the night; the second story three bedroom apartment complete with private entrance is available for rent. On a very clear day it is possible to see the Canadian shore from the top.
