Spirochetes are a phylum of bacteria that have long, hellically coiled cells (spirals). They are distinguished by the presence of flagella running lengthwise between the cell membrane and cell wall, called axial filaments. These cause a twisting motion which allows the spirochetes to move about. Important members of the phylum are: Leptospira species - causes Leptospirosis, Borrelia burgdorferi - causes Lyme disease, and Treponema pallidum - causes syphilis.
