This cultural symbol would like to make it back to the town of Mouscron in Belgium. Preferrably it would like to see many places in between a collect photos on the way.
In the popular tradition of the Lille region and the city of Mouscron, the Hurlus are Calvinist Protestants involved in attacks and looting. Persecuted by the Catholics, they would have taken refuge for a few years at Mont-à-Leux, in Mouscron, before seizing the local castle. After being pushed back to Kortrijk and Tournai, they left Mouscron to attack Lille, from where they would have been repulsed by the Lille archers and the local population.
The word "Hurlu" would have actually used to designate, depending on the moment, several types of people all active in the region of Flanders and Hainaut in the context of the second half of the 16th century:
- mercenaries;
- Calvinist partisans;
- looters.
The Hurlus name would be derived from the french word "hurlements" (scream) for the screams of the victims or the Dutch huurlingen ("mercenaries").
